Issues with 1998 ford ranger starting?

MY car will randomly not start, i pop the hood and jiggle the negative wire and it will start to work. The cable is attaced tightly to the terminal, it's the wiring leading away from the terminal I have to jiggle. I was wondering if anyone could help me with identify the problem. My car is a 1998 Ford ranger xlt.
