Should I get a 2002 Volkswagen jetta?

I ve been looking to downsize and have been looking around for a while now. Recently, a 2002 Volkswagen jetta has caught my interest. It has 123,000 miles, has a very good interior, but the paint on the hood of the car is peeling. It s being sold for $2200. How many more miles could I get out of it? I m going to test it out today. What things should I look for or ask the owners about? I ve heard about the timing belt issue as well as the serpentine belt.
Added (1). It is automatic transmission if that helps.
Added (2). I went onto carcomplaints.com and compared the issues of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta to my Ford explorer and from what I saw there are far lesser complaints and issues with the jetta.
