What do I do about my teenage son?

I am sorry this might be long but please read.
I will first start out by saying I have a very loving teenage son. But I am at my wits end with him.
He is 17 now but a conpletely different person than when he started high school, He used to be very much of a popular jock, he was varsity football as a freshmen and dated a nice popular cheerleader. He never did drugs and only went out on Friday nights. I was always told he good get a full scholarshipHe was very popular and well liked throughout the communityand when he was 16 got a Ford Mustang his sophmore year and everything was going good till he broke his leg and quit football. Everything has changed.
He is 17 almost 18 now and has a different attitude. He plays no sports and goes out every night. He grew his hair out long and wears stoner clothes and grew a goatee. He seems always so serious and I feel distant from him. He is still popular but not for the right reasons it seems. He broke up with his girlfriend and attracts a stoner girls. He sold his car and bought an old wolkswagon van. Its his senior year and he is only taking 4 classes. All he does and surf and smoke pot. I am not in approval and have confronted him and have tried to get him to stop but he won't. I am a single mother and we live in a major CA beach city. I don't know what to do with him because he gets phenomenal grades and has already been accepted to a big state school. I don't know what to do? How do I get my son back? What should i do about this?
