I had a tune up done on my taurus and was satisfied for the first day. The second day I started my car and befor I even got out of the driveway the exhaust cam completely disconnected at the flexpipe near the engine. I took it back to the mechanic and was told I needed a new cat converter. The new converter was inatalled and mpg was up to 30, just like new. The next day I had no power and maxed out at 40 mph. Back to the mechanic and I was told that the "upper converters" were falling apart. I was told that they had taken the new converter off and dumped pieces of the upper converters out and replaced the converter. The mpg is now down around 25. I am wondering if the low mpg would be due to residue from the upper converters remaining in the new converter. My mechanic is telling me that the digital read out in the dash of my car should not be relied on as they are notoriously inaccurate. Any ideas on why my mpg would have dropped to 25?
