Have a problem with my coolant fan on a 2002 Ford Focus 16v zetec?

Recently bought this car, only has 119k miles on it. I noticed the temperature was going 3/4 of the gauge when I was going through a drive through one day. I always thought the coolant fan would come on if you turned on the cars AC, but mine does not come on at all. What should I be checking first? I checked the coolant fan fuse and it is fine. Any advice would be appreciated!
