Couple scratches on my brand new car?

So I was driving to the movie theater with my friend to meet up with a couple of other friends. The movie theater parking lot was SUPER packed and I finally found, what seemed to be, the only available parking spot. It was really narrow (keep in mind, I just got my license about a month ago), so I was trying to pull into the spot, and I hit the guy's car next to me. My car was more scratched up than his. I went inside to ask who was the owner of this car, and I found him, so we went out and looked at the damage and he was like "you look like a new driver. Probably got parents who would murder you if you hit a guy. I need a new car anyway, and I really don't feel like calling the police right now. I'll let it go if you do. Just tell your parents you hit a pole or something." I did and we both went back inside and went on with our lives. I don't know how all this stuff works yet, but I did understand that it was just a small accident.

Was this the right thing to do? I told my parents I would pay for the damages because we don't want to go through insurance, either, so we're going to take care of it ourselves.
Added (1). Also, my car is a brand new 2015 Ford Focus, so I'm guessing the paint that was scratched is fairly new? I don't know if this makes a difference for when we fix my car?
