I own a ford escort and I was flatfoot shifting at high rpm's and it broke down! Help?!

I tried to start it up after it backfired, made a really weird noise and then it just gave up. For a little bit, it would try to turn over, but didnt. My distributer cap was broken and falling off, so I replaced that, but now it wont even try to turn over. I turn the key and absolutely nothing happens! What could it be and how much to fix?
