Gas gauge issues 2001 ford ranger 2wd manual 3.0 engine. 12 gallon gas tank?

the gas gauge fluctuates between 3/8 and 7/8 somewhat correlating to the amount of gas in my tank but it isn't accurate. What can i do to try and fix this problem? I'm hoping it isn't the float in the gas tank and would like to cover everything else before i drop my gas tank.
