What causes high rpms when idling?

when I start my 02 Ford Explorer my rpms shoot high then idles real low then goes high then low repeatedly and when trying to put it in drive engine shuts off… Could it do with anything with my catalytic converter or is it my O2 sensor or maybe a vaccum leak? Please help
