Car idling at 4000 rpm in park, what could this be?

I have a 2004 Ford Escape, and I was driving it home from work and the brake seemed harder to push to stop, then as I was getting off the highway I took my feet off everything and it was going 50km without me hitting any pedals, then I got into my condo parking lot and parked my car in my spot put it in park and all of a sudden it s rmps just go from like 1 or 2 thousand to 4000. Anyone have any clue what this could be?
