Key won't go into ignition?

Hi! I'm having a problem with my 1996 ford ranger. The key won't go into the ignition at all. I've seen people saying that you can turn the steering wheel but I've tried that and also it's parked on a flat surface. This is my only car and I don't have a lot of money so Is this something serious? What can I do about this? I had to take an uber taxi to work which costs a lot of money. Since I can't get the key in I can't drive it anywhere so I'll have to have it towed. Thanks!
