03 Ford Escort ZX2 won't turn over?

For the last week or so it was taking an extra second to turn over and would occasionally die when put in revers. Today it died, started again, sat for 6 hours, started then died five miles down the road. All the dash lights come on and it sounds like it wants to start but it doesn't turn over. The alternator and the battery were replaced last year.
Added (1). It has half a tank of gas and it didn't sound like the fuel pump was priming.
