Best make for a truck? Good gas mileage?

I'm looking to buy a truck, I used to drive a Ford and I loved it, but I need some suggestions on a make? I need good gas mileage, it doesn't have to be a huge truck, I just like having the extra room especially being able to put stuff in the back. My husband and I are planning a road trip in the next year or so across the country and that's another reason why I want a truck. Any suggestions a good make/model?
