Does the rental car have to be the same make?

My car is currently at the ford shop getting fixed, I wanted to get a rental car which they said they had to go through my insurance. I did and they said I could get a car and taht it will cover up to $30 per day, however when I went to the rental car companie they said the rental car had to of the same make as the car that is in the shop, ford. So they said all they had was really big truck, which was $30/per day and we had to cover for the tax. Because of the truck size I decided not to get the car. Has anyone ever been through a similar situation or know if this is true?
