Should I get a diesel truck or a gas?

I won't be hauling super heavy loads all the time but I will be pulling a 28 foot camper up to at least 8 to 10 times a year and a goose neck horse trailer with living quarters occasionally. Maybe a stock trailer here and there but no major 200+ miles. I've always wanted a diesel but I'm not sure if it would be the best for me. I've been reading about them and they sound like nothing but trouble and a money pit. Please help! Thanks in advance! Preferably a Ford or Chevy.
