Why are white northerners so different from white southerners?

When I travel the country I notice that white people are very different rom the north and south. I notice that white people in the North are a lot more preppy. They tend to have more money, wear polo clothing, and drive Ford cars. They dress relatively classy and have a lot more of a modernized American casual style. They also listen to indie music and live in big $400,000+ homes in fancy neighborhoods. They speak perfect English are are very clean. But when I go to the south, I notice that everyone is broke. The white people are smelly, wear food stained clothing and don't have a lot of money. They usually live in trailer parks and fly confederate flags and a lot of times they are missing teeth and completely racist. Why are they so different?
