Looking for a beater car. 1997 Toyota Corolla with 130K Miles?

My 2000 Ford Taurus recently crapped out at 130K miles and the cost to repair it is more than I can get for it. I really don't like my Taurus. It's bulky, American, and gets terrible gas mileage with a V6 engine.

I am currently looking at a 1997 Toyota Corolla. It has about 134K miles on it, and it is in pretty good shape. It is selling for about $1900, which is about how much it would cost to repair my Taurus.

I hear that Corollas are really reliable cars. My friend has a 1997, and in four years, he's only had to replace a starter and serpentine belt. My other friend has a 1994 Camry and uses it as his daily driver without any real problems.

I know this one is about 17 years old, but honestly, I'm just looking for a small, fuel efficient, and reliable car to get me through college and maybe a few years into adulthood.

I deliver pizzas part time, so I don't have a lot of money to spend, and I don't want to stink up/risk a newer car.

What do you all think? Should I repair my '00 Taurus with 130K or buy a '97 Corolla with 134K?
