What car options for commuter in 9-12k range?

I currently own a ford fusion valued at around 12-16k, depending upon whether i trade in or do private party. I really like it for the most part, but the mileage is awful (6 cylinder AWD). It's rated at 24 highway but even with most of my driving being highwway, i get closer to 21-22.

I'm considering trading down/laterally into something with better mileage. Maybe in the 35+ highway area. I'd prefer not to go with any models older than 2010, as my goal is to stick w. My car until i pay off my student loans ~3 years from now. Anyone have any good suggestions for sedans in that price range? I'm considering picking up a consumer reports subscription but thought i might see if anyone knows any good options off the cuff.
