Angelica- Issueswith my car wanting to give up?

Hi,
My car is a 1999 Ford escort zx2 and lately I ve been having one minor problem. My car starts great and everything but when I let it sit in park or even stop while o drive it starts to jolts and shake like it wants to give out. Once I start moving the shaking in and out goes away only until it comes to a stop. It has been happening for over a week now and the engine light is on and all but I have never felt something like this as if the car wants to give up. Yesterday I let it sit running just waiting to see if it gave out and the car did after about 8 minutes. I went to turn on the car and it did so perfectly but the shakes and jolts like it is trying to give up. I can t hear the shaking or jolting from the outside but I can feel and hear it in the car! Any suggestions or help before I take it to a mechanic please!
