My Ford Focus is so slow. How can I make it faster?!

My 2010 Ford Focus ses sedan is slower than a turtle. Is there anything I can do to it to make it fast? Like it can't even keep up to speed with other cars on the freeway going the speed limit. I've seen a 2010 Ford Focus modded and it was racing on a track. So what the heck did they do to their Focus to make it fast? I've heard you can buy a chip. How does a chip work? Also what other ways are there to make it faster? Thanks lol.
