How to regain pressure in my car brakes after putting in new brake fluid?

I have a 2005 ford escape. The brakes on the car didn't seem to good and i finally lost pressure in the brakes. I refilled the brake fluid and pumped the brakes in hopes that i would regain pressure in the brake but i still have not gotten any pressure out of the brake. I have heard of something called bleeding the brakes but is there anyway to get the brakes to work without doing that. Could anyone tell what i can do to regain pressure in the brakes.
