Importing european car to USA an economically viable option?

I seen and heard that ford has a model fiesta ECOnetic thats only sold in europe and makes around 65 mpg (over 88.5 mpg now with the newer models).

I find it kind of weird that we cant get that same car in the states, so i want to ask the community if you guys think it would pay itself in the long run if i buy and import the car and modify it to meet US regulations (no point in doing all that work only to have a car i cant legally drive on the street).

What do you guys think? Is it worth the effort?
