What could be wrong with my 2000 ford focus?

Me and my sister were driving from Northern Misissippi down to Orlando when we were near Dothan Alabama, there was a strange musty smell in the car from the air conditioning vents that seemed to get worse. We could hear occasional squeeking and scurrying sounds inside the car from the front end,

Eventually when we were on interstate 10 the headlights quit as well as the wipers. The air conditioner then started to become weak, and then there was a wub wub wub sound from under the hood and then Pop. We instantly lost power steering, and the car dinged and the red battery light came on. After this the temp guage started rapidly rising and soon a yellow light with an exclamation and a picture of a sun or a gear. I don't know what it was. A yellow light with a picture of a helicopter or motor or something then came on. I tried to keep the car on course without power steering and by the time we reached Tallahassee the engine was running extremely rough.

We had to have the car floored to just keep going 30 mph, and we got off the interstate, and then started through Tallahassee to try and reach highway 27, where we could drive slower and still make it to our Disney resort reservation. The car then just gave out, and we had to wait and let it cool a bit, and we got it started again after 10 minutes. We then stared driving through talahassee, and then a little red light with a picture of a magic lamp came on, and the engine started making all sorts of squeeking and rubbing sounds.
Added (1). Then there was suddenly a loud BANG, and the engine just stopped, and we coasted to a stop. We are just by a corner where someone could come whipping around the bend by some businesses and cream the back end of the car, possibly totaling it. We looked at the engine and found a gaping hole with something sticking out the back of the motor. Could this inhibit the engine from working, how could we fix it. Could there be an easy fix we could do with tire changing tools in the spare tire area,
Added (2). We called a tow truck and they said it would be up to 1.5 hours and $250.00. We are so worried about protecting the car from being hit that we took our luggage out, and set are luggage on the curb with us. I have been waving a feather boa around trying to call attention to the scene, and occasionally blowing a whistle. Our car has no horn and no blinkers as those broke a long ways back. My sister has climbed up a lamppost and is also waving a boa to try and call attention to the stranded car,
Added (3). People are seeing us at least and we are still hoping the car doesn't get creamed. If it gets hit at 30 mph on the front it will likely destroy the car and make it not worth fixing. We are hoping the fix is easy and inexpensive and we don't have to waste a Disney day in Tallahassee. My sister has been up on the top of the light pole a while, and she is trying to climb around on the post and wave the boa whenever a car passes to get drivers to watch out a little more.
Added (4). We are both in college, I'm studying English and shes studying philosophy. We are both intelligent people and we are had gotten into a yelling match about how we both couldn't figure out the car. Pedestrians keep putting money into her bag at the bottom of the lamppost, and into my bag on the curb. Why are people doing that, do people actually have sympathy for just passing by. Why is this, could we fix this cheaply and easily?
