Why should gun manufacturers be held liable for what criminals' illegal activities with their products?

Ford and Chrysler aren't held liable for the actions of drunk drivers. Oil companies aren't held responsible for people throwing Molotov cocktails. Why should the manufacturer of any product be held responsible for the criminal misuse of that product?
