What s causing my car to shake?

I have a 2008 ford escape. When I initially begin driving, it drives fine. But if I ride thru town or slower on the highway because of traffic, it begins to shake, then when I park, I smell buring rubber. What s causing this? I know I need brakes bit I ve never known worn brakes make a car act like this.
