Manual trans having trouble shifting? (self.MechanicAdvice)

'03 Ford Ranger
My boyfriend's car is having a hard time going in to gear. In order to start the car, he has to pull up a little sleeve on the clutch pedal in order for the clutch to go in all the way. Then shifting into reverse is almost impossible and the car will drive backwards while the clutch is all the way down. Then moving forward, 1st is impossible, he has to start in second because the stick shifter won't go into first… Third is less hard to shift into and fourth is even less difficult (while driving or stopped). Another weird thing is sometimes when we're stopped and he tries to get it in gear, his spedometer shoots up to 80 or 90mph for a second without him pressing on the gas. Any suggestions welcome! A while back, he did have his gear box (I THINK) replaced… Ugh. Thanks everyone!
