I need to find TDC on a 91 ford ranger it is currently out of time and i havee no knowledge of how to fix it?

Ive tried alignin the gears with notches matchin the picture in the book but that only made it worse. Also one time i had it goin good but the tension puly wiggled loose and everything spun now i dont know where anything is at
